Salem may not hold the same popularity status as that of its northern neighbor Portland but I've always found it alluring with its unique blend of hometown charm and small city atmosphere. While the options are more limited for restaurants, shops and activities, the places I discover in Salem feel homey, familiar and endearing.
Friends can still walk into a coffee shop of their choosing and feel a part of something, not simply an outsider. It is not uncommon to acknowledge the barista by name and they, in turn, do the same to you. There is something comforting in the familiarity and the calm of this city. It's beauty has not yet been lost to industry. No, the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest is still so easy to find. All that is required is a simple glance around us.
